What do you like about living in the Clarence Valley?

I love being part of the Clarence Valley community and enjoy the opportunity to spend time with my family and friends. I love the laidback lifestyle that Grafton offers and the feeling that you are part of something bigger than yourself. There are lots of great places to go and things to do, like the river and the beaches, restaurants and cafe scene and sport.

How do you spend your spare time?

I like to spend my spare time hanging out with my family and friends and going to the beach. I play all sorts of sports and I love basketball, swimming and soccer. We've got heaps of animals and I enjoy spending time with them too, especially our horses and dogs. I like to get involved in community events too and volunteer for things like the Ride for Youth.

Why did you become a Jacaranda Queen Candidate?

I decided to become a candidate this year because I thought it would be a fun way to challenge myself. I also like the idea of being a part of this iconic community event and encouraging other young people to get involved too. It's a fairly unique way to give back to our community and I am looking forward to meeting lots of new people along the way.

What event during the Jacaranda Festival Is special to you and why?

The Queen Crowning has always been special because I usually attend with my Nan and have spent years watching my cousins perform on stage. I also love the floats and the Venetian Carnival. I think it's great how all of the local businesses get involved too. It has been fun to be involved in Toast's Jacaranda celebrations over the past couple of years; the purple throne is always a hit.

What would it mean to you if you were chosen as Jacaranda Queen or Princess?

It's an absolute privilege to be involved in such an iconic event, let alone to contemplate becoming Queen or Princess. For me it's about the experience and what I can learn along the way. It's not something I had really considered doing now and it would be great if I can encourage other young woman to step up and get involved in future festivals.

Grafton is my hometown and always will be where my heart is as my family and friends live here. The people are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Looking out at the river is such a relaxed environment with a diverse community.

How do you spend your spare time?

Enjoying my time with my son, family and friends.

Why did you become a Jacaranda Queen Candidate?

I have seen contestants from previous years and I know contestants from last year who have enjoyed the experience. This has encouraged me to become a Queen Candidate this year.

What event during the Jacaranda Festival Is special to you and why?

Jacaranda Thursday since I was young and now with my own son, enjoying the breakfast at Market Square then looking at the markets and watching the acts from the local businesses. Seeing everyone dressed up and enjoying the Jacaranda festivities brings happiness to me.

What would it mean to you if you were chosen as Jacaranda Queen or Princess?

Since watching the Queen crowning ceremony over many years since a little girl, I have always dream to be of being a Queen Candidate. It would be mean so much to me to be the Jacaranda Queen or a Princess and be an ambassador of the Grafton and give support to the community.

I love Grafton, everyone is so friendly and the community spirit is fantastic. Grafton people look out for each other and pull together in times of need. People in Grafton also love an opportunity to have fun and celebrate our town. This is seen through all the amazing events and festivals held throughout the year, with Jacaranda being the best, unique and fun.

How do you spend your spare time?

I study nursing full-time and work at Harvey Norman, so I don’t have a lot of spare time. However I do enjoy hockey and sewing. My grandmother taught me and how to love the creative process. I enjoy the creative process of bringing concepts of images to life. I also love modelling for local businesses.

Why did you become a Jacaranda Queen Candidate?

I love Grafton and the Jacaranda Festival. I saw this as an opportunity to get involved and contribute to this great community and iconic festival it’s also a great opportunity to be an ambassador for the community throughout the year with fundraising events.

What event during the Jacaranda Festival Is special to you and why?

Retrofest! I love all things vintage and Retrofest epitomises Jacaranda for me. It gives people an opportunity to look back at some of the really cool things that have been in our past history, remember them and celebrate them.

What would it mean to you if you were chosen as Jacaranda Queen or Princess?

It would be an honour to be chosen as Jacaranda Queen or Princess. The festival is Grafton’s premier event each year. These titles and crowns carry a lot of responsibility. The hope, dreams and expectations of the whole community and the ultimate success of the festival all ride on the Jacaranda Party and an amazing Jacaranda Queen and Princess.

Enid McKew is no stranger to helping the young girls wanting to be involved with the royal aspect of the event, having been a great support to previous junior candidates as part of its subcommittee for the past seven years.

But this year, after being nominated by her fellow members at the South Grafton Bowling Sports and Recreation Club, Mrs McKew is stepping it up as what she described as being like an adopted mother figure for all the 2020 queen candidates.

She said she was looking forward to the chance to get to know the girls and provide support whenever they need it.

"I'll be there to lend an ear, be with them through the journey, try not to interfere and just let them have a lovely experience."

The crown is the symbol of the Jacaranda Festival, the highest honour the festival can bestow on a young woman of this city.
