At just 14 years old, Clarence Valley Anglican School student Caleb Foster brings fresh energy and perspective to this year's Jacaranda Festival. A lifelong resident of the Clarence Valley, Caleb fills his free time with diverse interests including drawing, cooking, crafts, horseback riding, and movie watching.

His decision to become a Junior Jacaranda Candidate stems from a mature observation: "More young men should be involved with the community more often." This thoughtful outlook reflects Caleb's desire to inspire other youth to engage with their community.

As the festival celebrates its momentous 90th anniversary, Caleb sees this as an extraordinary opportunity to deepen his understanding of Grafton's rich history. "This will be an exciting and eye-opening experience as it's such a major part of Grafton's heritage," he shares enthusiastically.

Among his cherished Jacaranda memories are the Float Procession, Banner Competition, and watching the town transform into a purple paradise. The Crowning Night holds particular significance for Caleb. "It's amazing to see people my age getting involved in the community and being recognized for their achievements," he explains.

Looking ahead to this year's festival, Caleb eagerly anticipates several events, including the Ball, Children's Party, Crowning Ceremony, and Musical Bingo. He values the opportunity to enhance his social skills and public speaking while forming new friendships within the community.

If chosen for a title, Caleb would embrace the role of Junior King, feeling it would be the perfect fit for his contributions to the festival's celebrations.

At 14 years old, Chantell Claydon brings the energy of youth and a deep personal connection to the Jacaranda Festival. A lifelong Clarence Valley resident, she maintains an active lifestyle through dance, hockey, and involvement with her local surf club, while also enjoying quiet moments at home with her beloved dogs.

Chantell's journey to becoming a Junior Candidate was inspired by former candidates from her dance studio. "I've wanted to be a junior candidate for a long time," she shares, highlighting how seeing others participate motivated her to follow in their footsteps.

Her connection to the festival runs deep – in fact, Chantell holds a special piece of Jacaranda history as the winner of the 2013 Beautiful Baby Competition. Now, she looks forward to participating in this same event from a different perspective, along with other festival highlights including the Jacaranda Ball and Children's Party.

With admirable courage, Chantell sees her candidacy as an opportunity for personal growth, particularly in conquering her fear of public speaking in front of large crowds. Her favourite festival memories include the festive atmosphere of Jacaranda Thursday, when shops and people dress up in celebration, dancing at the Crowning ceremony, and enjoying various events with family and friends.

"The Crowning is my favourite event," Chantell enthuses. "It's so exciting to be a part of that this year while celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Grafton Jacaranda Festival."

At just 12 years old, Isabella Roughley brings passion for performing arts and deep cultural connections to this year's Jacaranda Festival. Born and raised in Grafton, she dedicates much of her time to dance at the Ashley Albert Performing Arts Studio (AAPA), where she participates in eisteddfods and concerts with her troupe team.

Isabella's journey to becoming a Junior Candidate was inspired by her performances at last year's festival events. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," she shares enthusiastically. "I want to be a role model for the Clarence Valley youth and my young Aboriginal family and peers by sharing a sense of achievement and pride."

Her connection to the festival runs especially deep through the River Dreaming event, which holds particular significance for Isabella. "I love how the community, visitors and Elders come together for a special day to celebrate culture, music and dance to officially open the Jacaranda Festival," she explains. Last year, she had the honour of delivering her personal NAIDOC Speech at this cherished event.

Some of Isabella's fondest festival memories come from performing at Illuminate, Venetian Carnival, and the Crowning ceremony. "I was honoured to dance with my troupe team in front of huge audiences," she recalls warmly. "The fireworks, time spent with family and friends, and the overall festival excitement make these events truly special."

Looking ahead to the 90th anniversary celebrations, Isabella is excited to participate in all festival events, with special anticipation for the Jacaranda Ball. She looks forward to deepening her understanding of Jacaranda history while continuing to perform at key events as a Junior Candidate.

Though she's only called the Clarence Valley home for eight years, 13-year-old Pippa Creighton has embraced every opportunity her community has offered. An avid netball player with a fascinating interest in criminal psychology, Pippa balances her time between sports, family, friends, and pursuing her goals.

"Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to strive and work towards goals," Pippa shares, viewing her participation in the Jacaranda Festival as another exciting milestone. Her enthusiasm particularly shines when discussing the Jacaranda Ball: "I'm excited to live my Disney Princess life while taking part in a journey that could change my life."

However, Pippa's aspirations extend beyond the glamour. She sees her candidacy as an opportunity for personal growth, particularly in public speaking, and a chance to forge meaningful connections within the community. The festival's 90th anniversary holds special significance for her family, who have been long-time attendees. "Seeing how the crowds and festival has grown is wonderful," she reflects.

Some of Pippa's fondest Jacaranda memories involve quality time spent with her mother at the markets and sharing laughs with her cousin and friends. She appreciates how the festival caters to everyone's interests, whether it's food, shopping, or entertainment.

Her decision to run for Junior Jacaranda Queen reflects a deep appreciation for community inclusion. "While it opens amazing opportunities for me, it also shows that no matter where you come from, there is always a place for you here," she explains, embodying the welcoming spirit of the festival.

The crown is the symbol of the Jacaranda Festival, the highest honour the festival can bestow on a young person of this city.
